Increased real contact in thermal interfaces: A carbon nanotube/foil material
نویسندگان
چکیده
The thermal performance of an interface material comprised of a metal foil with dense, vertically oriented carbon nanotube CNT arrays synthesized on both of its surfaces is characterized for rough and smooth interfaces. The CNT/foil deforms in the interfaces by two mechanisms, CNT deformation and foil deformation, that may significantly increase the number of CNT contact spots on both sides of the foil. As a result, thermal interface resistances less than 10 mm2 K/W are achieved at moderate pressures and compare very favorably to alternative interface materials and structures. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. Carbon nanotube thermal interfaces on gadolinium foil
We report the thermal behavior of gadolinium foils to be used in magneto thermoelectric generator cells. Magneto thermoelectric generator cell technology exploits the ferromagnetic phase transition of gadolinium to drive the movement of a diaphragm ‘shuttle’ whose mechanical energy is converted to electrical form and which enhances heat transfer through both conduction and convection. Efficient...
متن کاملContact mechanics and thermal conductance of carbon nanotube array interfaces
A model is developed in this work to predict the thermal contact resistance of carbon nanotube (CNT) array interfaces with CNT arrays synthesized directly on substrate surfaces. An analytical model for contact mechanics is first developed in conjunction with prior data from load–displacement experiments to predict the real contact area established in CNT array interfaces as a function of applie...
متن کاملMolecular dynamics simulations of carbon nanotube/silicon interfacial thermal conductance.
Using molecular dynamics simulations with Tersoff reactive many-body potential for Si-Si, Si-C, and C-C interactions, we have calculated the thermal conductance at the interfaces between carbon nanotube (CNT) and silicon at different applied pressures. The interfaces are formed by axially compressing and indenting capped or uncapped CNTs against 2 x 1 reconstructed Si surfaces. The results show...
متن کاملPalladium Thiolate Bonding of Carbon Nanotube Thermal Interfaces
Carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays can be effective thermal interface materials with high compliance and conductance over a wide temperature range. Here, we study CNT interface structures in which free CNT ends are bonded using Pd hexadecanethiolate, Pd(SC16H35)2, to an opposing substrate (one-sided interface) or opposing CNT array (two-sided interface) to enhance contact conductance while maintainin...
متن کاملExperimental Study on Interfacial Thermal Transport of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube
Interfacial thermal transport of multi-walled carbon nanotube is explored by using T-type sensor. Reliable signals of heat flow through an individual nanotube were obtained. Estimated thermal boundary resistances between the end of CNT and solid surfaces do not show the clear dependency on material that has been predicted by the diffuse mismatch model treating graphite. This discrepancy is main...
